About this trip
Giona is a deluxe wooden phinisi sailing from Labuan Bajo. The trip runs 3 days and 2 nights around Komodo National Park, and you sleep on board. Prices start at IDR 3,800,000 per person.
What sets Giona apart is its size: just 4 cabins and a maximum of 12 guests, and every one of those cabins has air conditioning and its own bathroom. That includes the cheapest shared cabin, so nobody queues for a bathroom with the people next door.
What is the boat like?
The hull is wood, built in the phinisi style in 2018. It is 25 metres long and 4 metres wide. A Mitsubishi 6D15 engine gives a cruising speed of 7 to 10 knots, so the hops between islands stay short.
A fibreglass dinghy with a Yamaha 40 HP engine takes you ashore. Navigation is a Garmin 585 GPS, and communication runs on SSB and VHF radio. The boat carries 4,000 litres of fresh water. Safety gear covers life jackets, a life raft, life buoys, fire extinguishers, distress signals and first aid equipment.
There are two shared spaces: an indoor dining room with wide windows, and an outdoor sundeck laid with artificial grass and bean bags.
Who is it right for?
If you travel solo or as a pair on a budget, take the Shared Cabin. You pay per person and share the cabin with other guests, but the bathroom is still inside the cabin.
If you are two and want a room to yourselves, the Private Cabin fits. There are two of them, called Triton and Doris.
If you are four, a small family or a group of friends, look at the Master Cabin. It sleeps up to 4 and has its own balcony.
If your group is 8 to 12 people, chartering the whole boat makes more sense. The boat is then yours alone.
What are the cabins like?
There are 4 cabins at 3 price levels. All have air conditioning, all have a private bathroom, and all face the sea.
The Shared Cabin (Thetis) is on the main deck at IDR 3,800,000 per person. It sleeps 4. The double bed is raised, with a second mattress below it. This is the cheapest way on board for solo travellers.
The Private Cabins (Triton and Doris) are on the lower deck at IDR 5,000,000 per person. Each has one double bed for 2, wood-panelled walls and windows onto the sea. The IDR 1,200,000 difference from the Shared Cabin buys you a room used only by you and your travel partner.
The Master Cabin (Poseidon) is on the upper deck at IDR 5,700,000 per person. A double bed, two extra beds for a third and fourth guest, and a glass door onto a private balcony with a cushioned bench. In the morning you can drink your coffee there and watch the other boats go by.
If you get seasick easily, pick a lower deck cabin. The lower the cabin, the less it usually rolls.
What about meals and facilities?
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included for the whole trip, along with snacks, coffee, tea and mineral water. Meals are served in the dining room with the other guests.
Also included: pick up from your hotel or the airport in Labuan Bajo, snorkelling gear, life jackets, a guide, the Kanawa Island entrance fee, and photos and video taken by the crew.
Not included: flights, personal expenses, alcoholic drinks, crew tips and the Komodo National Park entrance fee.
Where does the route go?
Day one takes in Kelor Island, a snorkel at Manjarite, then an evening at Kalong Island waiting for thousands of flying foxes to leave the mangroves. Day two is sunrise on Padar, Pink Beach, the dragon trek on Komodo Island, Manta Point and Taka Makassar. Day three is a last snorkel at Kanawa or Sebayur, then back alongside in Labuan Bajo around 11:00 to 12:00. The order can shift with the weather and the currents.
When does it depart?
The Giona open trip runs twice a week: Monday to Wednesday, and Friday to Sunday. Cabins left on each date are shown on this page.
Can I charter the whole boat?
Yes. Giona also runs private charters, from 2 days 1 night to longer trips. The price depends on duration, season and group size, so our team sends it on WhatsApp once your dates and group size are clear.
How do I book?

Day 15 stops
- 10:00-11:00 - Board at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo, meet the crew and settle into your cabin.
- Kelor Island - An easy trek up the ridge. Short but steep, and the cluster of islands opens up from the top.
- Manjarite - A relaxed snorkel in clear water over shallow reef and reef fish.
- Kalong Island - We anchor in the late afternoon and wait for thousands of flying foxes to leave the mangroves as the sun drops.
- Overnight on board.

Day 26 stops
- Padar Island - We leave in the dark to catch sunrise. The climb is real, and what waits at the top is the three-bay view Komodo is known for.
- Pink Beach - The sand is pink from broken coral. You can swim and snorkel straight off the beach.
- Komodo Island - A trek with a national park ranger to see the dragons in their own habitat. The ranger sets the route and the distance.
- Manta Point - A swim looking for manta rays. It depends on the current and the sea that day.
- Taka Makassar - A sandbar that surfaces at low tide, good for photos and a snorkel along its edge.
- Overnight on board.

Day 33 stops
- Kanawa or Siaba Island - A last snorkel in clear water. Turtles pass through Siaba often.
- Around 11:00 - Back alongside at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo.
- That leaves room for an afternoon flight, but do not book one too tight.
