About this trip

Bajo Sunset Voyages is a deluxe-class wooden phinisi running 3 day, 2 night Komodo open trips out of Labuan Bajo, from IDR 3,650,000 per person. What sets this boat apart from boats in the same bracket is simple: all five cabins have their own bathroom, with hot water and a rain shower. Nobody queues in the corridor at half past four in the morning while everyone gets ready for the Padar climb. It carries 14 guests, and that number already includes two extra beds. With every cabin at its standard layout, there are only 12 people on board. 🦎

What is the boat like?

Wooden hull, two masts, a bowsprit reaching out over the water, painted white below the waterline. Inside it is teak, from the cabin walls to the ceilings. Three spaces get used all trip: the upper deck, the dining saloon on the main deck, and the bow.

The upper deck holds one long table and canvas chairs. Dinner is served there, and the view changes every evening because the boat moves anchorage. The dining saloon on the main deck is enclosed, with windows all the way round, so when the wind picks up or rain comes through, meals carry on with the sea still in sight. Over the bow there is a net with cushions thrown on it, and that is the spot people compete for during the daytime crossings. The indoor lounge runs a long sofa between windows on both sides.

Starlink wifi stays on for the whole trip. That is not a small detail out here: normal phone signal drops the moment the boat enters the national park, and on most boats that means three days out of contact.

What are the cabins like?

Five rooms across four types, all air conditioned, all ensuite.

Master Balcony sits on the upper deck. One queen bed, long windows on two sides, and a private balcony that opens straight onto the deck. IDR 6,550,000 per person. One extra bed can be added at IDR 3,000,000 per person, so it sleeps three.

Deluxe Balcony sits on the main deck. Queen bed again, private balcony again, the deck is the difference. IDR 5,650,000 per person, extra bed IDR 3,000,000.

Signature Ocean comes as two rooms, both on the main deck and identical to each other: one double bed with a row of windows along the headboard. The sea is the first thing you see when you wake up. IDR 4,450,000 per person, and the sensible pick for a couple.

Family Cabin is on the lower deck, with the round portholes you would expect down there. One double bed plus two singles, and an ensuite bathroom. IDR 3,650,000 per person with four of you, IDR 4,450,000 per person with three.

What about the food?

Meals are full board throughout, cooked by the crew. Mineral water, tea and coffee are free flow. Towels are already in the cabin.

Free to use: snorkelling gear, life jackets and paddle boards. For the evenings there is a bluetooth sound system plus a TV and karaoke set in the saloon. There is a first aid kit, a local guide travels with the boat, and the crew shoots the trip on a mirrorless camera, a drone and a GoPro. The files go to the guests, so nobody needs to hire a photographer.

What happens across the three days?

Day one you are collected from your hotel or the airport and the boat leaves at 10:30. The afternoon is snorkelling at Sebayur Island, then Manta Point to swim with manta rays, then Taka Makassar, the sandbar that only surfaces at low tide. The boat anchors for the night and you sleep out at sea.

Day two starts in the dark. Up Padar Island for sunrise, and the climb is real, so carry water. Down to Long Pink Beach for swimming on the pink sand, then Komodo Island to walk with a ranger and find the dragons. The boat crosses slowly to Kalong Island through the afternoon, and the day closes waiting for thousands of flying foxes to leave the mangroves as the sun drops.

Day three is gentle. A short but steep trek on Kelor Island, a last snorkel at Manjarite, and the boat ties up in Labuan Bajo around 12:00.

Anything to prepare before booking?

The 2026 operator flyer sets the 3D2N trip as Sunday to Tuesday. In some months the operator runs a different pattern, so confirm the date when you book.

If you land on the departure day, take a flight that arrives before 10:00. If you fly home on day three, book anything after 14:00 to stay safe.

One thing is not included: the Komodo National Park entrance fee, it is arranged by the Open Trip Komodo team. Flights, hotels either side of the trip, crew tips and personal spending are not included either.

Check which dates are still open, then book your cabin.
