About this trip

Ahsana is a 30-metre wooden phinisi in the deluxe class, with 9 cabins and room for up to 25 guests. Its 3 day 2 night Komodo open trip leaves from Labuan Bajo harbour, and you pay per person: from IDR 4,000,000 in a sharing cabin up to IDR 7,250,000 in the Master Cabin with its own balcony and bathtub.

Two things set Ahsana apart from boats in the same class. First, all nine cabins have a private bathroom, including the sharing cabins sold by the bed, so nobody queues for a shared toilet. Second, the deck has a shared jacuzzi and Starlink wifi, which you rarely find on an open trip starting around IDR 4 million.

What is the boat like?

It is 30 metres long and 7.5 metres wide, with a wooden phinisi hull. Power comes from two Yanmar 6CXM 350 HP engines and two 20 kVA generators, and the fresh water tank holds 8,000 litres. There are 10 crew. Navigation is GPS, AIS, radar, echosounder and VHF radio. There are life jackets for every guest, plus a life raft, an EPIRB and fire extinguishers. A 40 HP speedboat takes you to the beaches.

Outside the cabins there is a timber-walled indoor dining room with a long table and sea windows, a small bar with high stools, an outdoor dining deck under a canvas roof, a sundeck up top, karaoke and a paddle board.

Who is it right for?

If you travel solo, the two sharing cabins are sold per person. You pay for one bed and do not need to find a roommate first. For couples, the Superior Cabin at IDR 4,500,000 per person is the cheapest way into a queen bed. If you want a balcony, start with the Deluxe Cabin with Balcony at IDR 6,250,000. For groups and families, 9 cabins and 25 places leave room to split across several rooms, and everyone follows the same route and schedule.

What are the cabins like?

There are seven cabin types, all air-conditioned with a private bathroom and hot water. Sharing Cabin Lower Deck, IDR 4,000,000 per person, for 4 people on the lower deck, sold by the bed. Sharing Cabin 4 Sea View, IDR 4,250,000 per person, for 4 people on the middle deck with sea windows, also sold by the bed. Superior Cabin, IDR 4,500,000 per person, a queen bed on the lower deck with round portholes. Deluxe Cabin, IDR 5,500,000 per person, a queen bed on the middle deck with wide sea windows. Deluxe Cabin with Balcony, IDR 6,250,000 per person, a queen bed on the upper deck with a private balcony. Signature Cabin with Balcony & Bathtub, IDR 6,750,000 per person, on the main deck with a balcony and a bathtub. Master Cabin with Balcony & Bathtub, IDR 7,250,000 per person, the largest cabin, on the main deck, with a bathtub on a balcony facing the sunset. The five non-sharing cabins are sold per cabin, minimum two people.

What about meals and facilities?

Included: three meals a day plus an afternoon snack, unlimited drinking water, coffee and tea, snorkelling gear, a local guide, trip photos, hotel or airport transfer around Labuan Bajo, and the boat clearance fee.

Not included: flights and insurance, alcoholic drinks, crew tips, the ranger fee paid on site, and the Komodo National Park entry ticket, which is IDR 350,000 for Indonesian citizens and IDR 650,000 for foreign visitors per person.

Where does the route go?

On day one you board between 10:00 and 11:00, then take a short hike on Kelor Island, snorkel at Manjarite, and spend the evening at Kalong Island watching thousands of flying foxes leave the mangroves at sunset. Day two is the full one: sunrise from the top of Padar Island, a swim at Pink Beach, a ranger-led walk on Komodo Island, then snorkelling at Manta Point and Taka Makassar. Day three is a last snorkel at Kanawa or Siaba, and you are back in Labuan Bajo around 11:00, in time for an afternoon or evening flight. The order of stops can change with the weather, and the captain makes that call.
