About this trip
Capt Octopus is a deluxe-class wooden phinisi, 21.5 metres long and 4.04 metres wide. It sails from Labuan Bajo on 2 day, 1 night open trips through Komodo National Park. Prices start at IDR 3,750,000 per person.
The boat has 4 cabins for 12 guests, up to 15 with extra beds, looked after by 5 crew. Every cabin has air conditioning, towels, charging points and its own bathroom. So whichever cabin you take, you are not queuing for a bathroom with another cabin.
What are the cabins like?
The Sharing Room is on the lower deck. It has 2 double beds and 2 single beds, costs IDR 3,750,000 per person and can be booked by one guest. If you travel alone and do not mind sharing with other guests, this is the cheapest way on board.
Private Room 1 is on the main deck. One double bed for two, IDR 4,750,000 per person, with wide windows facing the sea.
Private Room 2 is on the upper deck. A double bed plus an extra double that pulls out from underneath. The first two guests pay IDR 4,750,000 each, the third and fourth IDR 2,750,000.
Private Room 3 is on the lower deck. A double bed above a pull-out single, with a small round porthole. Two guests pay IDR 4,250,000 each, a third guest IDR 2,750,000.
Who is it right for?
If there are four of you, look at Private Room 2. The total is IDR 15,000,000, which works out at IDR 3,750,000 per person. That is the sharing price, but the room is yours.
Three people get the same maths. Private Room 3 for three is IDR 11,250,000 in total, again IDR 3,750,000 per person.
Two of you and you want the big windows? Take Private Room 1. Travelling solo? The Sharing Room is the answer.
What is the boat like?
The hull is a wooden phinisi. It is 21.5 metres long and 4.04 metres wide, with a Mitsubishi 6D14 engine. It carries 4 tons of fresh water and has 10,000 watts of power. Life jackets and a life raft are on board.
The upper deck has a canvas-roofed area with sofas and wooden tables. There is also a corner laid with artificial grass and bean bags facing the sea, the best spot to wait for sunset. Inside there is a wood-panelled dining room and a coffee and tea station you can use freely.
Where does it go?
On day one you board in Labuan Bajo, snorkel at Kelor Island, then visit Rinca Island to see Komodo dragons with a ranger. In the late afternoon you reach Kalong Island as thousands of fruit bats leave the mangroves together. You sleep on board.
On day two you climb Padar Island early, then go on to Pink Beach, the Taka Makassar sandbar and snorkelling at Manta Point. You are back in Labuan Bajo by late afternoon. The order can change with the weather and the current, and that call belongs to the crew on the day.
What about food and facilities?
Every meal on the trip is included, plus snacks, coffee, tea and mineral water. Snorkelling gear, a tour leader, a local guide, photos and video during the open trip, and airport or hotel transfers are included too.
Not included: flights, hotels on land, the Komodo National Park ticket and ranger fee, personal spending, and crew tips if you want to give them. You can add the park ticket at checkout.
When does it leave?

Can I charter the whole boat?
