About this trip

Want to explore Komodo but not keen on a boat packed wall to wall? Come join the 3 Days 2 Nights Open Trip aboard Kapal Ayla! 🌊

We set off early from Labuan Bajo and you get two nights sleeping onboard (liveaboard). With a maximum of 10 guests the group stays small, so the trip actually feels relaxed and private.

So what happens across the 3 days?

Day 1: We start with island hopping to Kelor and Manjarite to ease into the water. Late afternoon we settle in at Kalong Island and wait for thousands of flying foxes to lift off against the sunset. Pure magic.

Day 2: Up early to chase sunrise on Padar Island, then straight on to Pink Beach. After that we go say hello to the Komodo dragons (relax, a ranger comes with us!). The day closes with a swim alongside manta rays at Manta Point and a stop at the Taka Makassar sandbar.

What is the boat like?

Kapal Ayla is a 22.6 metre wooden boat. For sleeping there are 4 cabin options you can pick from:

  • •Double 1, Double 2, & Twin: 2 people each (perfect for a partner or your best mate).
  • •Bunk (4 single beds): this is the one if you are travelling solo!

A crew of 4 including the captain looks after you the whole way, and the facilities cover what you need, including 2 outside bathrooms with sit-down toilets.

Interested? Just message us on WhatsApp. Totally fine if you only want to ask which dates are open or the latest price per cabin.

(One more thing: the Komodo National Park entrance ticket is not included and is arranged by the Open Trip Komodo team. IDR 350,000 for Indonesian citizens and IDR 650,000 for foreign visitors.)

See you in Labuan Bajo! ⛵

Itinerary

  1. Day 1

We cast off from KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo between 10:00 and 11:00. An easy warm-up trek for the view over Kelor Island, then a relaxed snorkel at Manjarite. The day closes with the magic of sunset at Kalong Island, thousands of flying foxes lifting off behind it.

  2. Day 2

Up early to chase the iconic sunrise over the three bays of Padar Island. Then the pink sand of Pink Beach, meeting the ancient dragons on Komodo Island with a ranger, a swim looking for manta rays at Manta Point, and a stop at Taka Makassar.

  3. Day 3

One last clear-water snorkel at Kanawa or Siaba. The boat docks back at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo around 11:00, leaving you a safe margin for an afternoon flight.

Day 15 stops

  • 10:00-11:00 - Board at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo, meet the crew and settle into your cabin.
  • Kelor Island - An easy trek up the ridge. Short but steep, and the cluster of islands opens up from the top.
  • Manjarite - A relaxed snorkel in clear water over shallow reef and reef fish.
  • Kalong Island - We anchor in the late afternoon and wait for thousands of flying foxes to leave the mangroves as the sun drops.
  • Overnight on board.

Day 26 stops

  • Padar Island - We leave in the dark to catch sunrise. The climb is real, and what waits at the top is the three-bay view Komodo is known for.
  • Pink Beach - The sand is pink from broken coral. You can swim and snorkel straight off the beach.
  • Komodo Island - A trek with a national park ranger to see the dragons in their own habitat. The ranger sets the route and the distance.
  • Manta Point - A swim looking for manta rays. It depends on the current and the sea that day.
  • Taka Makassar - A sandbar that surfaces at low tide, good for photos and a snorkel along its edge.
  • Overnight on board.

Frequently asked questions

Per person. Deluxe 1, Deluxe 2 and Deluxe Twin are Rp 5,750,000 per person. Deluxe Share is Rp 4,750,000 per bed. All of them already include the fuel surcharge.
No. It is IDR 350,000 for Indonesian citizens and IDR 650,000 for foreign visitors per person. The ticket is arranged by the Open Trip Komodo team.
One cabin holds four single beds and is sold per bed, so you only pay for your own bunk. It suits solo travellers, or you can take the whole cabin if there are four of you.
Your seat is locked once the full payment goes through, and nothing is billed afterwards. The pay button on this page charges the full amount, in one payment with no balance later.
No. Ayla has two shared bathrooms with sit-down toilets, and all four cabins are air conditioned. The boat carries at most 10 guests, so the morning queue is usually short. Fresh water is 3 tons for the whole trip, so keep showers reasonable and bring wet wipes for afternoons on deck.
You board at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo between 10:00 and 11:00 on day one. On day three the boat is back alongside the same harbour around 11:00. That leaves room for an afternoon flight, but do not book one too tight, because weather can move the docking time.
Transfers within Labuan Bajo town are included, so you just give us your hotel address when you confirm. If you are staying outside town or landing that same morning, message us on WhatsApp first so the pickup time fits the boat schedule.
Yes. Life jackets and snorkeling gear are included, and a guide gets in the water at every snorkeling stop. One thing to note: Manta Point depends on the current, so the captain decides whether it is safe that day. On Komodo Island everyone walks with a national park ranger, and the ranger sets the route and the distance.
Ayla is a teak and ironwood boat, 22.59 metres long and 3.95 metres wide, built in 2016 and renovated in 2017. She runs with four crew, and power comes from a 10,000 watt generator plus solar panels, so the air conditioning and the sockets stay on through the trip. Cruising speed is 7 knots, slow enough that the hops between islands become part of the trip.
Sunrise, and that is why this trip leaves in the dark on day two. The light is at its best and the air at its coolest before the sun is up, because the trail to the Padar ridge is open with no shade. By season, April to October has the calmest sea; January and February bring the biggest swell and schedules can shift.
Liveaboard means you sleep on the boat, so three days really are three days at sea: you wake up already near the next stop, with no trip back to Labuan Bajo each morning. What supports that on Ayla are air conditioned cabins, two bathrooms and seven meals on board. A day trip only reaches the three or four nearest stops and returns in the afternoon.
