About this trip
Marea is a 36 metre wooden phinisi running 3 day 2 night sharing trips around Komodo from Labuan Bajo. Eight cabins, every one with its own bathroom and air conditioning, up to 17 guests on board. You join by the cabin instead of chartering the whole boat.
It sits at the top of what open trip means here: a jacuzzi on the bow, a sundeck with loungers, a dining table out on the open deck, and two cabins with private terraces and a bathtub. The route is the usual open trip route. What changes is the boat you sleep on.
What is the boat like?
The hull is wood, built as a traditional phinisi, 36 metres long and 7 metres wide. The main engine is an 8DC11 340 PS, backed by two 40 kVA generators for power and air conditioning through the night. Navigation runs on radar and Garmin Aqua Maps, with VHF and MF radio on board.
Marea has three decks. The lower deck holds three cabins, the main deck two and the upper deck three. Outside the cabins there is an indoor dining room with a long wooden table and wide sea windows, a second table on the open deck, a jacuzzi on the bow and a sundeck up top with loungers.
Which cabin suits you?
Six cabin types are sold, and the gap between them is real. Prices below are per person for the 3 day 2 night trip.
Sharing Cabin 3 is on the lower deck at IDR 5,250,000 per person and sleeps three. If you travel alone, you book one bed and share the cabin with other guests. Sharing Cabin 2 is also on the lower deck, with two beds, at IDR 5,750,000 per person. The Superior Cabin is on the lower deck too, one wide bed for two, at IDR 5,750,000 per person.
Higher up, the price follows how much sea you see. There are two Deluxe Cabins at 90 degrees on the upper deck, a double bed facing a wide window, at IDR 7,500,000 per person. There are two Signature Cabins at 180 degrees on the main deck, with windows on both sides of the bed and a glass door onto a terrace with a bathtub, at IDR 8,950,000 per person. There is only one Royal Cabin at 270 degrees, on the upper deck, its glass walls wrapping almost all the way around the bed and its terrace holding a bathtub of its own, at IDR 9,950,000 per person. With just one on board, the Royal is usually the first cabin to go.
Where does the route go?
Day one you board at Labuan Bajo harbour between 10 and 11 in the morning, with lunch once the boat is underway. Stops are Kelor Island for a short but steep climb to the ridge, snorkelling on the reef wall at Manjarite, then Kalong Island at dusk to watch thousands of fruit bats leave the mangroves. You sleep on board.
Day two is the long one. It starts before sunrise on Padar Island for the view over three bays, then Pink Beach for a swim, Komodo Island on foot with a national park ranger, Manta Point, and the sandbar at Taka Makassar. The second night is also on board.
Day three is one last snorkel at Kanawa or Siaba, depending on the current, then breakfast on the way back. The boat docks in Labuan Bajo around 11, which leaves room for an afternoon flight.
What is included?
Your cabin of choice, three meals a day plus an afternoon snack, and drinking water, coffee and tea whenever you want them. Snorkelling gear, a local guide, trip photos, the boat's sailing permit, and hotel or airport pickup around Labuan Bajo are part of the cabin price as well.
Not included: the per person fuel surcharge and the ranger fee, paid on site, and the Komodo National Park entrance fee, which the Open Trip Komodo team arranges. The exact amounts are in the cost breakdown on this page, so nothing surprises you on departure day.

Day 15 stops
- 10:00-11:00 - Board at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo, meet the crew and settle into your cabin.
- Kelor Island - An easy trek up the ridge. Short but steep, and the cluster of islands opens up from the top.
- Manjarite - A relaxed snorkel in clear water over shallow reef and reef fish.
- Kalong Island - We anchor in the late afternoon and wait for thousands of flying foxes to leave the mangroves as the sun drops.
- Overnight on board.

Day 26 stops
- Padar Island - We leave in the dark to catch sunrise. The climb is real, and what waits at the top is the three-bay view Komodo is known for.
- Pink Beach - The sand is pink from broken coral. You can swim and snorkel straight off the beach.
- Komodo Island - A trek with a national park ranger to see the dragons in their own habitat. The ranger sets the route and the distance.
- Manta Point - A swim looking for manta rays. It depends on the current and the sea that day.
- Taka Makassar - A sandbar that surfaces at low tide, good for photos and a snorkel along its edge.
- Overnight on board.

Day 33 stops
- Kanawa or Siaba Island - A last snorkel in clear water. Turtles pass through Siaba often.
- Around 11:00 - Back alongside at KP3 Harbour in Labuan Bajo.
- That leaves room for an afternoon flight, but do not book one too tight.
